The Short Film, Gaia and the King: An Eco Fable, with an Introduction by the Filmmaker

Welcome to the very first entry in the Film and Video Links category in Sights and Sounds.  This week, we’ll watch an excellent short film, Gaia and the King: An Eco Fable, with an introduction by the filmmaker, Laura Lewis-Barr.

By John G. Stamos

It’s my great honor and pleasure to welcome back this week’s guest, the award winning filmmaker, author, and educator, Laura Lewis-Barr.  Laura was The Renaissance Garden Guy’s first ever guest writer and contributor, so I think it’s fitting that her wonderful film, Gaia and the King: An Eco Fable, is the very first film to be featured here in the new Sights and Sounds section.  Also included here is Laura’s introduction to the film, where you’ll gain a bit of insight into, among other things, the work’s inspiration and intent.  Laura suggests watching her introduction first, so, you’ll find an image link to her intro below, followed by another image link which will take you directly to the film.  Please enjoy Laura’s introduction, and please enjoy Gaia and the King: An Eco Fable.

I hope you’ve enjoyed Gaia and the King, and I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know a bit more about Laura, and hearing, in her own words, about what inspired and influenced her in the making of the film.  I’ve always been fascinated by what my favorite filmmakers were thinking when they created their films, and I really loved hearing Laura’s thoughts about this one.  She’s an amazing talent and a truly fascinating creator.

As mentioned above, Laura’s been a guest and a contributor here before.  One of her major interests concerns the theories and teachings of the acclaimed Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung.  To read her essay about the impact of Jungian principles on her life, her thoughts, and her creative process, please click here.  Laura’s also an avid gardener, and the life’s lessons she’s learned while tending her own beautiful garden are remarkably salient and universally applicable – please click here to read about them.  Traveling is generally not without its ups and downs, and Laura Lewis-Barr is not without a sense of humor (and ample levels of equanimity).  Please click here to read her funny piece about some of her vacationing misadventures.  Phone Gal is a haunting LLB film that reimagines the famous Hans Chrstian Andersen fairy tale, “The Little Match Girl.”  I reviewed the film here last year.  Click here if you’d like to read my take on it.

My dear readers and subscribers, thank you for dropping in to watch this fascinating film and Laura’s wonderful introduction.  Your interest, your readership, and your presence here are always dearly appreciated.

Cheers, and Happy Gardening!
