Winter

Winter

Welcome to the Winter Gallery.  Gardening along the shores of Lake Michigan on the Indiana-Michigan border implies having more than a passing familiarity with winter.  Winter dictates the end of one growing season, and the beginning of another.  In this image gallery, you’ll see some familiar faces: some you my remember from my essay, “For My Dogs,” and some you may remember from some of the other RGG image galleries like Miscellanea and Loved Ones.  You’ll see that even in the depths of the coldest months of the year, while the garden plants are slumbering, there’s still plenty of activity, plenty of snowy beauty, and plenty of memories here in Michiana Shores.  More photos are being added on a continuing basis, so make sure to check back often.

This picture, and the next two, show my 'Molly's White' hellebores budding and growing on February 1, 2024. They're always the very first buds in my garden every year. Note that these three photos, along with the following four, are also featured in The RGG "Precocious Bloomers" image gallery. I included these shots in both galleries in order to illustrate life's indomitable character. It persists and flourishes in the face of nature's most adverse impediments.
Winter
Crocuses. They'll flower in February.

Blue and white grape hyacinths in this photo, and the next one. Members of the colony in this photo are emerging now, while those in the next photo emerged the previous fall and remained green throughout the winter. They all grow in the same planting feature (my "Blue and White Hill"), but in different areas.
