Moonlight
“Moonlight” is my new poem. It’s about that plaintive light that reveals more secrets than just those of a cloudless night.

Moonlight
John G. Stamos
Moonlight,
Can I follow you beneath the knitting
of copses
and thickets
and eaves?
Under a shell of my making,
and through and through
the places of the night,
Inside and out?
Can I follow you there?
Can I learn what you’ve learned,
Across timeless gulfs,
of the darkness
of crags and of chasms,
and of shallows and of eddies?
Can you show me
All that you know
of the trail,
and of the span
of my own vital arc?
Will you follow me?
Will you watch
My secrets
and know them as yours,
and whisper them
Back to me,
Scented by your gleam
and your shimmer,
and better
and truer?
Will you follow me into the darkness
of evening after evening,
of night
upon night, and
Know where I go
and when I go
and why?
Will you follow me
in sleep?
In dreams?
Can your diaphanous lambency
Reveal the fissured terrain
of broken history
and concupiscent strophe,
and woe
and regret?
Can your sensible delicacy,
Your sincere effulgence,
Foment chirruping retrieval
from the blackest of nights?
Moonlight, do you know
That I while away the blasphemous
Hours of the harlot day’s
Oblique assault,
and wait for the purity,
the clarity, of your
Coronation
As you send the brightest
of stars
to fade?
Can you feel
Your crepuscular advance
Sparking the neural map
Under the shell of my making,
and stoking
the thrumming interchange
of blood and air,
and flesh and bone?
Do you read my letter?
Do you write my script?
Moonlight,
in the ink-dark hours,
Can your vanquishing glow
Reveal to you
That I love you?
Does the night’s reach ebb
with the pulsing
of your own
True
Heart?

Wonderful to read your poem about shared loves, the moon and moonlight! I’ve been obsessed with these since I was a little girl, and still have vivid memories of stepping outside in 0 degree Fahrenheit winter nights when my family was asleep so I could soak up the ambience of the moonlight on the snow. You captured the captivated spirit well!
Thank you, Lisa – how truly kind of you! I’m so glad that this little work called to mind for you such treasured, poignant childhood memories. The eternal beauty of moonlight, I believe, is unmatched anywhere throughout the heavens, or right here on Earth, in its power to capture the human imagination, inspire creativity, and impassion the soul. Thank you for revealing your own wondrous childhood fascination and love for moonlight… moonlight on white snow… the image is indelible. Thanks once again, Lisa!
