Centuries
This is my brand new poem, “Centuries,” published for the very first time right here in The Renaissance Garden Guy. I hope you like it.
By John G. Stamos
Centuries
John G. Stamos
Can I look across the water and see her?
Or across the world?
If I close my eyes…
Yes.
And hear her.
When the sun breaks over the horizon at dawn,
At first light,
Does its glory match the miracle of her eyes
Or her lips
Or hands or hair?
The engines of existence,
Of universe upon infinite universe,
Will sputter,
And will die
Before she is equaled.
How many centuries must pass
Before her words are forgotten
Or the crush of her power
Over hopelessness
Is lost?
How many centuries will pass,
Will witness the rise and fall
Of seas and civilizations,
And the crumbling of a flower pressed
Between the yellowing pages of a forgotten book,
And never reduce the beating of her heart to only echoes?
She is moved, articulated, by the source
Of eternities,
And of a flower’s opening
To greet the light
Of day
In a garden.
Her walk shows the way
To Heaven,
And her voice is the sound of gravity
And the parting of clouds
To reveal the sun.
She beckons by breathing the same air
As me,
And by the spell she casts
When her hands caress the Earth.
Century upon century
Upon century
Will pass,
Forever
Will pass, and
She will be here,
Across the water.
Across the world.
